The Hammer

I have a new nickname. Major Magneto called MSG Ranger and said "D*mn, we need to call her the Hammer!" I chuckled. My nickname in the Navy was Sledge Hammer or Hammer for short.

Was that "Hammer" nickname because you were a Seabee or machinist in the Navy?

I read this book by Osprey about US Army infantrymen in Vietnam and their recruitment, equipment, training, and service. A Vietnam Green Beret, Gordon L. Rottman wrote it. It's interesting.

Congrats on snagging a new batch of "cruits". I hope they work out well.

KAT,

weeeelllll, no. you can read about it in the archives of my blog Nov 16, 2005.

I'll have to look for that book. Honestly, I am trying to read as much as I can on leadership right now. As much as I love and miss the Navy... the Navy has nothing on the Army in the way of leadership in the enlisted ranks.

Have you read Paul Howe's "Leadership and Training for the Fight"? He has some very blunt views on training for combat.

I enjoy your blog! I am planning on signning up for OCS soon, when I find out if my husband is going in or not (he has had back surgery).

Check the NAVEDTRA (or NROTC) websites for literature on Navy leadership. I went through NAVEDTRA before it was locked down and found some "Military Requirements" for PO3's etc so on. I got hold of the Army manual and it's good too. I read about "followership" which means the ability to give concise reports, etc.

Take it from a wimpy techy type who has done very little management in his life; it's a matter of not being scared and knowing what to do and doing it.

Psychology and motivational theory are quite good but it boils down to what's outside the books. Never will a book adequately teach people skills. Ever. That's an important thing to have.
